THE occupant of a house west of Toowoomba that was completely destroyed by fire was only alerted to it by ash falling on his face.

The structure fire on a rural property just outside Wyandra, south of Charleville in south-west Queensland, was reported about 4.20 this morning.

Urban and rural fire crews rushed to the scene on Maruya Narran Rd and battled the blaze but sadly couldn't save the building from being burnt to the ground.

QFES officials said the man, who was the sole occupant of the house, was only woken up when pieces of ash started to fall on his face.

Investigators will be on-scene this morning to determine the cause of the fire, but it is not being treated as suspicious.
