Maradona tells Messi not to retire

FOOTBALL: Argentina great Diego Maradona has urged Lionel Messi to reconsider his international retirement.

Messi, 29, tearfully decided he would pull the pin on playing for his country following his penalty kick miss in the 4-2 shootout defeat to Chile in the Copa America final – their fourth major tournament final loss in nine years.

“Those saying he should quit don’t want us to see what a disaster Argentinean football has become,” Maradona told La Nacion newspaper.

“Messi must go on.”
