Maranoa Council approves new Wallumbilla quarry

MARANOA Regional Council has approved a new quarry development located to the north of Wallumbilla.

The new Beauview Quarry, proposed by locals Harley and Ellen Nixon, will be allowed to extract up to 100,000 tonnes of resources every year and will lead to significant upgrades to local roads.

Sunnyside Road will be upgraded from the entry point of the quarry to Wallumbilla North Road to a pavement width of seven metres, and the intersection will also be upgraded.

The development passed by a 7-1 vote, with Cr Geoff McMullen voting against and Cr Wendy Taylor being absent on October 7.

Cr McMullen opposed the motion as the operating hours have been reduced, particularly given that a nearby Council-operated quarry has broader operating hours.

“I voted against it because I didn’t agree with the council reducing the operating hours at the applicants have asked for,” Cr McMullen said.

“I don’t believe they should’ve been reducing their operating hours.”

He is worried it could potentially impact the council quarry in the future as well.

Operation times for the new development are restricted between 6am and 6pm from Monday to Friday, and between 8am and 5pm on Saturday.

However, the quarry operator can apply to the council to vary the hours of operation for a ‘particular project’.

The developer is expected to meet all costs and will not receive contribution from the council.
