By-election looms as McVeigh wins right for federal fight

TOOWOOMBA politician John McVeigh has secured pre-selection to fight for retiring Member for Groom Ian Macfarlane's federal seat.

Current Toowoomba South MP John McVeigh faced off against doctor and anti-marriage equality campaigner David van Gend.

LNP local members held a pre-selection vote today with Mr McVeigh coming out on top.

As the new LNP candidate, Mr McVeigh will be challenging Nick Xenophon team's Josie Townsend and Labor's Bronwyn Herbertson at the next federal election.

Mr McVeigh is the current state opposition spokesman for science, information technology and innovation and is hoping to make the switch from state to federal politics.

Late last month current Federal Member for Groom Ian Macfarlane endorsed Mr McVeigh for LNP pre-selection in Groom.

He said Mr McVeigh was the most qualified candidate for the job.

"He is a fierce advocate for Toowoomba, and his experience is closely aligned with the Turnbull Government's Innovation Agenda," he said.

"I believe John McVeigh is the best candidate for the seat of Groom, and that he will make an outstanding member of the Federal Parliament."

As Mr McVeigh has now been endorsed as the LNP Groom candidate, a by-election will be triggered for his Toowoomba South seat.
