Mexicans pounce on blunder to boot Russia out of cup

AN AMAZING defensive blunder has given Mexico a 2-1 win to knock hosts Russia out of the Confederations Cup.

Seven minutes after halftime Hector Herrera sent a clearance 80 metres downfield from the edge of the Mexican area.

Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev let the ball bounce once about 25 metres from his goal.

With Akinfeev and fellow defenders stunned, Mexico winger Hirving Lozano headed the ball over the keeper into the net to send the CONCACAF champions into the semi-finals.

Russia led through Alexander Samedov but Nestor Araujo equalised on the half hour.

The loss was another setback for Russia, hosts of next year's World Cup, after being bundled out of last year's European Championship at the group stage.
