Minister ‘betrayed’ us on Adani: native title group

QUEENSLAND'S mines minister has defended his decision to approve the Carmichael coal mine despite telling a native title group he would wait for their Federal Court objection to be heard. Mines Minister Dr Anthony Lynham approved the mining lease of the massive mine earlier this month.  A representative for the Wangan and Jagalingou (W&J) people, Adrian Burragubba ALL CORRECT, on Wednesday said Dr Lynham had told him in a letter the mine would not be approved until the W&J's court objection to the mine was decided.  W&J representative Murrawah Johnson CORRECT said the approval of the mine was a "betrayal". "Under sustained pressure, he has betrayed us," she said. But Dr Lynham said the length of the court case had forced him to approve the mine.  "My decision was that the benefits outweigh the challenges, and that the project would deliver significant net benefits to the people of Queensland," Dr Lynham told ARM Newsdesk.  "My initial preference in October 2015 was to await the outcome of Mr Burragubba's judicial review application. It was not apparent at that time how long the judicial review proceeding would take.  "However, as I said earlier this month, to give greater certainty to all parties, I have since considered the challenges and the benefits of this project carefully before approving the grant of the leases. "Those considerations have included the legal action. The pending JR proceedings did not constitute a legal obstacle to making a decision." Mr Burragubba said W&J representatives would challenge Carmichael mine's leases.  The application will claim the mining leases were not properly issued.  "But we will simply not stand by while the Queensland government licenses the destruction of our homelands," he said.  A Queensland Resources Council spokeswoman said the approvals process must be overhauled to prevent such legal challenges to mines. - ARM NEWSDESK
