Missing backpack 750km away lands man with Roma court date

When Jared Trevor Byrnes lost his backpack 750km away in Mackay, he probably did not expect police to return it along with a court summons.

Roma Magistrates Court heard that Byrnes had lost the bag along a Mackay road which was eventually handed in to police at 3.20am on November 15, 2020.

Police alleged they found a glass pipe in the bag before they tracked down Byrnes.

Police prosecutor sergeant Heather Whiting told the court they found him on December 18, 2020.

“The defendant told police that it was his bag and there may have been a glass pipe inside it,” sergeant Whiting said.

Byrnes, who represented himself, did not wish to say anything about his matter.

He pleaded guilty to one count of possessing a pipe used in connection with smoking a drug, and magistrate Peter Saggers handed him a fine of $150 with no conviction recorded.

Byrnes was also ordered to surrender the pipe.
