Mitsubishi Triton toughs it out on Auto Torque test drive

MUCH like the average tradesman, the all new Mitsubishi Triton works hard and plays even harder.

This workhorse is loaded with plenty of high tech gadgetry, practical pieces and comfort and room to boot.

Triton's distinctive exterior design not only evokes the muscular aesthetics drivers have come to know and love, it has also been created to maximise aerodynamics, contributing to greater vehicle stability at high speeds and low fuel consumption.

In essence the new Mitsubishi Triton is tougher, smarter and more practical than ever before.

I was fortunate enough to take the ultimate utility working horse in the range: GLS 4x4 dual cab.

Decorated with an eye-catching chrome grille, standard sports bar and LED daytime running lamps - just a couple of the bells and whistles this top end ute had to offer.

The Mitsubishi Triton GLS double cab provides ample load capacity with 1520mm in length and 475mm in height, which without the side steps could have been a challenge for me climbing into one.

Couple this with impressive power and torque and you will gain confidence in getting any job done with ease.

Foot to pedal, Mitsubishi Triton GLS boasts impressive power when it's needed - powered by a 2.4L DOHC MIVEC 16 valve common rail intercooled diesel engine.

An aluminium cylinder block and lightweight materials reduce weight and is amongst the quietest and most efficient diesel engines.

Meanwhile the MIVEC common rail direct injection turbo diesel engine will makes driving efficient and exciting when on the job, churning out 133kW of power at 3,500rpm and 430Nm of torque at 2,500rpm.

For the inner adventurer, off-road comes with no limits in the Triton.

Four-wheel-driving comes easy, even to a novice like myself with an Easy Select 4WD system that allows the driver to switch between 2WD and 4WD while on the move with three operating modes - 2H, 4H and 4L.

The driver can change between 2H and 4H at speeds under 100kmh.

Just because it's a workhorse, doesn't mean you need to feel like you've been riding one.

Triton understand the important of comfort, and this vehicle does not compromise.

Expect nothing less than a smooth, quiet ride and premium finishes include leather seats.

Triton combines the interior comforts of a passenger car with the power, durability and 4WD performance of a pick-up.

In the GLS, Triton's Mitsubishi Multi Communication System (MMCS) lets you use the high-definition 7" touch screen to control the system's audio, navigation and information features.

The GLS also offers audio Bluetooth to connect your smart phone to and carry on the job listening to your favourite tunes.

The navigation system provides 3D view capability with includes 3D images of buildings and landmarks.

Useful Points of Interest and speed limit information on major roads mean you're kept well informed.

Mitsubishi Triton is equipped with an array of safety features.

To prevent 'trailer swing' when towing at speed, Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) will control individual wheel slip to stabilise the trailer.

The system detects when the trailer is starting to oscillate and automatically warns drivers behind by flashing brake lights on both the car and trailer.

Other safety features include ABS, EBD, Active stability control, hill start assist and brake assist system (hydraulic) just to name a few.
