MOVIE REVIEW: Cars 3 is still a fun ride

NUMBER 95 is back on the track, racing in the sport he loves, in Disney- Pixar's Cars 3, and Lightning McQueen has a very important message to tell.

It's hard to believe the red racing machine first sped onto the big screen more than a decade ago in the franchise's original Cars (2006).

Moviegoers will enjoy seeing McQueen and his trusty sidekicks like Mater, Mack, Sally, Luigi and Guido return, but Cars 3 introduces a new generation of racers - a group of fast, sleek racers led by the confident and cocky Jackson Storm.

The latest speedsters, trained on high-tech simulators and programmed to perfect technique and maximize performance on the track, are redefining the sport of car racing and McQueen can no longer keep up.

In his struggles to get back into pole position, McQueen meets a group of characters who provide a link to Lightning's late coach, mentor and friend, Doc Hudson.

It is this connection that guides and inspires Number 95 and highlights the importance of mentorship - the main theme of the film.

Determined to get back, McQueen must decide if his love for racing is enough to fuel the comeback of his life.

No longer the young hotshot racer, Lightning turns to the bold, bright yellow trainer Cruz Ramirez who helps McQueen get back on track and makes him realise the value in giving back to the next generation.

Cars 3 will resonate with older audiences as it taps in to the question many top athletes face in their careers - do you go out on top or fight till the end?

If you were a follower of the first two films in the franchise then make sure you see this latest installment.

Perhaps the content is a bit over the heads of those younger than eight years old but the brilliant animation and entertaining elements of the movie are worth firing up all cylinders on to get to the cinema these holidays.

Cars 3 opens nationally tomorrow.
