MPs pass firefighter cancer compensation law
OUR volunteer firefighters have won their battle for fair and equitable cancer compensation.
State Government MPs have just voted yes to a bill that amended the Workers Compensation Act to give unpaid and paid firies access to compensation for diseases they may catch during their duties.
The vote was unanimous.
The bill caused serious concern among the state's 35,000-member red and yellow army over the past few months.
The key concern was a clause that required them to attend 150 events - such as flood or fire - before being eligible.
They called the clause "discriminatory" because it did not apply to paid firefighters.
There was no time limit on making the claims.
