Elon Musk among tech heavyweights fighting for ethical AI
TECH billionaire Elon Musk is among the industry heavyweights funding a new non-profit research company to encourage the ethical and safe development of artificial intelligence (AI).
Mr Musk announced the formation of OpenAI in a tweet leading to the company's first blog post.
The Telsa Motors chief executive was among a group of sponsors, which also included Jessica Livingston and Sam Altman from Y Combinator and PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel, to contribute a total of $US1 billion to the project.
Mr Musk will serve as co-chairman, along with Mr Altman.
In its opening post, the OpenAI team said artificial intelligence had always been a "surprising field" and stressed the need for it to be developed to benefit society, rather than in any company's self interest.
