BRISBANE Roar coach John Aloisi has blamed a lack of fitness for the team's disappointing A-League campaign last season.

Under former coach Mike Mulvey, the Roar showed plenty of attacking quality but didn't have the stamina required.
Aloisi quickly identified that after talking with his senior players, he went about working his troops as hard as possible in the off-season.

The former Socceroos star said he believed his team was ready for what should be a revitalised Western Sydney outfit at Pirtek Stadium in the A-League season opener tonight.

"A lot of people were questioning 'are they (Roar players) getting too old or are they not motivated?'" Aloisi told APN.

"I came in and asked a few of the older players what it was and they said they didn't feel that they trained hard enough the last pre-season.

"Now they believe they have trained hard and they are feeling fit."

Aloisi said he was looking forward to seeing what Jamie Maclaren (pictured), recruited from the Perth Glory, could add to the team.

"He loses his defenders very well," Aloisi said. "Hopefully he can fulfil all his potential in the next year or so."

The Roar had some good news with another Spanish recruit - midfielder Javier Hervas Salmoral - arriving yesterday
The 26-year-old played in La Liga with Sevilla FC, and recently was on loan in the Spanish second-tier competition.
