OPINION: Tough choices for our young Y10 students

QUEENSLAND Year 10 students are currently contemplating what life could look like after the school bell rings for the last time as many finalise their subject choices and plans for Years 11 and 12.

Around this time of year, Year 10 students typically meet with teachers, faculty heads and career guidance officers to discuss their future goals and subject selections for their senior years.

They'll also talk at the dinner table about what they'd like to do and some may well be told about their future, rather than decide themselves.

It seems only a short time ago most of us carried on through high school with no real vision as to what we were going to go off and pursue.

I must admit it wasn't until I had almost finished Year 12 that I decided to give journalism a crack.

I feel for those who are so young to have to make such a difficult decision.

No doubt many will go off and train for years for a job they may never enjoy.

They'll then find that changing jobs mid-stream is a difficult decision and comes with a major financial burden.
