Paedophile former priest targeted teens loses bail bid

A FORMER Anglican priest jailed this week for molesting a fourth altar boy has lost a bid for bail pending appeal.

Barry John Greaves, 79, pleaded guilty on Monday to indecently dealing with a 13-year-old boy at Thargomindah between December 11, 1969, and December 20, 1970.

Brisbane District Court heard Greaves encouraged the boy to get his mother's permission to travel from Cunnamulla to Thargomindah to be his altar boy during a mass and then indecently dealt with the teen in a shower at a granny flat behind the church.

He was sentenced to 12 months jail, suspended after he has served three months.

Greaves was also jailed in 2009 for sexually abusing three altar boys, aged 11 to 16, when he was working as an Anglican rector for the Boonah and Harrisville districts in the early 1980s.

For that, he was sentenced to three years' jail but released after nine months.

His lawyers argued at Monday's sentencing that Greaves should not have been given any more jail time because of his age, health issues and that he would likely have received no more jail time if the 2009 sentencing included the fourth boy.

Greaves has already submitted to the Queensland Court of Appeal that Monday's sentence was manifestly excessive.
His lawyer argued in Brisbane Supreme Court today that Greaves should be granted bail in exceptional circumstances.

He said Greaves might have already served the three-month jail term before an appeal could be heard and if the appeal was successful, there was no way to undo the time served.

But Justice Peter Applegarth said criminals should not view their sentences as provisional until the appeal court had reviewed their case.

He said he did not believe the Greaves case met the criteria for exceptional circumstances for bail.

Greaves, who was a chaplain to Brisbane archbishops Peter Hollingworth and Phillip Aspinall, was born in Toowoomba and completed his schooling at Gatton.
