Parole board pushed to decision on Postcard Bandit

INFAMOUS robber Brenden James Abbott, who once escaped a prison in Wacol, should know next week whether the parole board intends to release him from jail.

Brisbane Supreme Court Justice Jean Dalton ordered on Friday that the parole board make a preliminary decision by next week to determine Abbott's parole.

The board has also been given an April deadline to make its final decision, unless there are legal issues.

Last week Justice Dalton ruled that the parole board made errors when it refused Abbott parole last year, saying there was no evidence why Abbott had been classified as high risk.

Abbott, 53, who has previously shown interest in living on the Sunshine Coast, is serving a 25-year sentence for a string of armed robberies and a 1997 breakout from a jail in Wacol.

He was nicknamed the Postcard Bandit after allegedly sending police postcards while he was on the run - but his lawyers have previously denied this happened.

If released on parole, it is likely Abbott will face extradition to Western Australia. - ARM NEWSDESK
