Immediate parole after beating partner on a Gympie street

A MAN who kicked, punched, head butted and bit his partner in a car on Little Channon St was given immediate parole when sentenced to three months jail for assault occasioning bodily harm in Gympie Magistrates Court on Monday.

The court heard, on January 14, the man, 36, was driving with his partner and two children when an argument broke out. Witnesses saw the man stop the car on the road and the assault take place.

The assault breached a court bond issued in March for a similar attack when the man, aggravated by his partner, grabbed her by the hair, threw her to the ground and punched her in the face, the court heard.

The offender's lawyer said his client and partner were like petrol and fire - they should not be together for long.

He said despite having two children together, his client realised the pair could not be together.

Magistrate M. Baldwin told the offender that people's lives were being ruined and lost by acts of this nature.

"Domestic violence is an absolute curse on our community; particularly in the presence of children," she said.

"We need to break that cycle. You need to be the role model... and let your children see it's not normal, not acceptable and totally abhorrent."

The defendant forfeited a $1000 bond and was resentenced to three months jail, suspended for 12 months, alongside 12 months probation.

For breach of bail, possessing drugs and related utensils the man was fined a total of $1150. For a further bail breach, he was given a suspended jail term of one month.

"You've got a suspended sentence hanging over your head," Mrs Baldwin told the offender.

"Your freedom today is conditional and based on your progress."
