Highway reopens after deadly crash as woman airlifted

UPDATE: Police have reopened the Leichhardt Hwy seven hours after a crash in which a Chinchilla man was killed today.

The highway, about 13km south of Miles, reopened about 8pm.

The Forensic Crash Unit is continuing its investigations into the crash. 

UPDATE: Police have identified the victim of a fatal crash in Miles this afternoon.

A 90-year-old Chinchilla man, a passenger from the van, died at the scene.

Another passenger from the van, an 82-year-old Chinchilla woman, was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.

Two other male passengers of the van aged 90 and 87 and the 75-year-old male driver received minor injuries.

The 28-year-old male truck driver from Chinchilla was uninjured.

The Forensic Crash Unit are investigating and the highway is expected to open in the next hour.

UPDATE 4.30PM: A man has died and a woman is in a serious condition after a horror two-vehicle crash west of Toowoomba.

Police confirmed a man died at the scene of the collision between a van and a truck at the intersection of the Leichhardt Hwy and Fairy Meadow Rd south of Miles.

The man had been travelling in the van.

A woman, also in the van, suffered serious injuries and has been airlifted from the scene.

Police media said the Leichhardt Hwy would likely be closed for several hours as Forensic Crash Unit investigations got under way.

Traffic controllers are on scene diverting traffic around the crash.

UPDATE 2.40PM: The RACQ LifeFlight helicopter has been called in to airlift a woman with serious injuries from a highway crash in the Darling Downs.

Ambulance, police and fire are at the scene of the incident, which reportedly occurred just after 1.30pm when a garbage truck and van collided 10km south of Miles on the Leichhardt Hwy.

A woman is being treated for a fractured collarbone, fractured leg and abdominal tenderness and will be flown to hospital.

Another patient was treated for minor injuries.

Police have advised motorists to stay away from the area, as northbound traffic has been affected.

1.45PM: A person is reportedly trapped in a two-vehicle road traffic crash on a highway in the Darling Downs.

Initial reports suggest the incident occurred on the Leichhardt Hwy outside Miles after 1.30pm, where a truck and a car collided.

Emergency services have responded to the callout and are on route to the scene.
