Phone scammers target Killarney man’s bank details

THEY are the type of call that are not uncommon but one Southern Downs man is urging others to stay guarded when a stranger calls.

Peter Cloherty was on high alert when an anonymous caller rang his Killarney home last week.

Mr Cloherty said an unfamiliar voice on the other end of the line and the suspicious conversation that followed made him suspect a scam.

"In the afternoon the phone rang and it was some Asian woman who claimed to be from the debt department of the Australian federal government," he said.

"They told me they owed me $6300 and asked if I knew why they owed me that much.

"I thought it was a big load of bull and hung up, because as far as I know there's no such thing as the debt department."

Without caller ID, Mr Cloherty said he was unable to tell if another call was from the same person but said he wanted to warn others about his experience.

He said he had previously been contacted by another suspected scammer, and he was not the only one in Killarney.

"Someone rang again but they didn't speak at all so I don't know if she had a tried to call me back again," he said.

"A couple of years back reckoned they owed me more $1000, but I'm a disability pensioner so there'd be no reason to call me because the government would have my details for all that anyway.

"My cousin over in Oleander St had an email sent to her saying she was owed $1000 as well.

"These scammers might get some poor love who think's its real and give their details and next thing they know their whole life savings are gone.

"I'm not too worried about it personally, they've probably just found my number in the phonebook even though I've asked for a private number, but I wanted people to warn people be a bit wary."
