Plans for CCTV on every major Maranoa intersection

All major intersections across every town in the Maranoa Region could be installed with CCTV as part of a large-scale initiative, which some believe will aim to make local towns the 'safest' in Queensland.

The council voted unanimously to prepare a report for a new 'crime reduction strategy' in the ordinary meeting on January 27.

Moved by mayor Tyson Golder and seconded by deputy mayor Geoff McMullen, the resolution authorised a call-out for expressions of interest for companies to rig Wi-Fi security cameras across the entire region.

There will also be an option for residents to request cameras for areas with crime problems.

Councillor John Birkett asked the meeting whether businesses who already have security cameras would be incorporated into the discussion.

Cr Golder replied saying it would be a region building initiative, which would also include street lighting.

"I think police now would talk to business owners," Cr Golder said.

"But part of that report is that if people have a problem with a street, it'll be that business owners can mention that as well."

He told the meeting that the community was "very upset about crime in the Maranoa" and he believed it was a "very big project" needing to be done.

"Of course it doesn't worry the vast majority of residents who haven't done anything wrong," Cr Golder said.

"And this would only be used when there was a crime."
