P&O visitors opt for Island tours over mainland activities

P&O CRUISES brought thousands of visitors to the Fraser Coast, but the passengers opted for Fraser Island tours, with none reaching the mainland.

In the second P&O visit to the region this year, more than 1200 people were brought aboard the Pacific Eden.

The ship docked near Kingfisher Bay on Fraser Island early in the day.

Although trips to the mainland were planned, with hope to bring in revenue for Fraser Coast businesses, Fraser Coast Tourism and Events (FCTE) acting general manager Brad Nardi said the tourists did not take advantage of the plans.

"The tenders haven't come into Hervey Bay on this occasion due to guests opting for Fraser Island and Great Sandy Strait products and experiences.

"This ship is being serviced for tours by several Fraser Coast operators who are picking guests up from the dock at Kingfisher Bay Resort, including Tasman Venture, AquaVue Cafe Watersports and Hervey Bay Fly and Sportfishing.

"We have also been working with P&O Cruises and Kingfisher Bay Resort to deliver a fantastic welcome to guests of the Pacific Eden."

Following the success of two visits this year, eight P&O cruise visits are currently available for booking online.

The Pacific Eden and the Pacific Aria are both expected to return. Mr Nadi said for the future P&O visits to the Fraser Coast, FCTE would encourage cruisers to visit the mainland.

"For those heading to shore, we have a mobile Visitor Information Centre on hand to provide information on the entire Fraser Coast, and encourage repeat visitation to our region," he said.

"We are looking forward to more cruise visitors over the coming 12 months and beyond, and will continue to look at maximising packaging options."

The next P&O visit to the Fraser Coast will set sail on January 9, and is part of a four-day cruise.

Others are planned for May, three in November, and three in December.
