Police break up 30-strong melee in Chinchilla

PUNCHES and capsicum spray went flying through the air as two lone police officers tried to break up a violent brawl involving around 30 people at McDonalds Chinchilla early on Sunday morning.

Officer in Charge of Chinchilla Police Station Sergeant Gerard Brady said police were called to the fast food restaurant shortly after the local licensed premises had closed for the night, where they found a group of foreign itinerant workers involved in a verbal argument with a number of locals.

"Police attempted to separate all parties, however a number of people began physically fighting in front of police," Sgt Brady said.

"As a result, a number of persons were capsicum sprayed, and six people have been charged in relation to good order and obstructing police offences and they all will attend Chinchilla Magistrates Court on March 9."

Sgt Brady said the mob's behaviour was disgusting.

"It was disgraceful, particularly on the back of all the one punch can kill issues that have been happening in Brisbane and larger centres, obviously the message just doesn't get through to these drunken idiots," he said.

"It was almost mob mentality. That's pretty off the chain for a small town."
