Pub brawl forces man to cop $1800 hit to wallet

NEWCASTLE man Adam Russell Martin couldn't remember much of his last visit to Toowoomba, but he won't soon forget the $1800 fine that came out of it.

Martin, 26, had been visiting friends in Toowoomba on the weekend of April 4/5, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard yesterday.

By his own admission, he had too much to drink and, for reasons which remained a mystery, he approached and punched a man in the face at Tattersalls Hotel in Toowoomba's CBD about 12.45am, April 5.

He had then struggled with security officers who intervened and with police on Operation Safe Night Out who arrived to arrest him, police prosecutor Senior Constable Alistair Windsor told the court.

Martin travelled from his home in Glendale near Newcastle to Toowoomba to plead guilty to charges of committing a public nuisance within a licensed premises, obstructing police and failing to leave a licensed premises.

His solicitor Jon Wiedman of Toowoomba legal firm Hede, Byrne and Hall told the court his client had no memory of the incident and could offer no explanation.

However, his client was very remorseful and apologetic and wished to apologise to the victim, the police and security staff for his behaviour, he said.

His client had no previous criminal history at all and the events of that evening appeared out of character for him, Mr Wiedman submitted.

Magistrate Graham Lee described Martin's drunken behaviour as "totally abhorrent" and fined him $1800 but ordered the conviction not be recorded.
