Queensland clubs finally have cause to celebrate

AFL: It had been almost two years to the day, but Queensland footy finally got to enjoy a double celebration.

Not since round 19, 2014, had both the Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns enjoyed victories on the same weekend.

The Suns had beaten the Saints by 53 points to remain just percentage outside the top eight, while the Lions had notched a sixth victory with success over Melbourne by 17 points.

Fast forward to round 18, 2016, and the Suns registered their sixth win of the season – and third in four weeks – by seeing off Fremantle at home, while the Lions ended a 12-match losing streak by crushing Essendon.

How long it will be before the clubs double up again remains to be seen, but they’ll be hoping it’s this coming week.

“This is only the start,” promising Lion Tom Cutler told media ahead of Saturday’s home against Port Adelaide.

“Our group has got to stay united ... we can’t afford to rest on one win.”

The Suns, meanwhile, face Melbourne at the MCG this Sunday.

The Lions’ 37-point win over the Bombers moved them a game clear of the bottom.

“For our guys to get a win on an away track (at Docklands) when we weren’t expected to … it just builds great faith, great belief,” Cutler said.

“We know we beat Port Adelaide at the Gabba last year, and we play them again this week, so we’re hoping to beat them again.”
