Ringers win U14s title
RUGBY LEAGUE: The Western Ringers have taken out the under-14s title with a convincing 40-14 victory against the St George Saints at Cities Oval in Roma on Saturday.
The Roma and District Junior Rugby League grand final was played in emotional circumstances with the recent passing of St George U14s player Williki Collins. Players, family and club officials paid their respects with a minute of silence before the game.
Both teams made bright a start to the match, trading blows and scoring several tries to run in at half time with the Ringers ahead by two points.
The second half belonged to the Ringers, their defence holding strong against wave after wave of St George attacks while scoring points of their own.
Four unanswered tries to the Ringers proved the difference in the end, with the final score blowing out to 26 points - belying the closeness of the match.
In U12s, Roma Saints Maroon defeated Roma Saints White 34-18 in a physical contest of attrition.
While Maroon raced to a 20-point lead, White threatened to make an epic comeback, reducing the margin to 12 points midway through the second half.
The class of the Maroon side shone through and put the result beyond doubt with a few tries towards full time.
