Rising to a challenge
Rugby League: It may be their first year as a team, but the Western Ringers have defied odds and made it to the Junior Roma and District Rugby League grand final this weekend.
The under-14 side, made up of seven Charleville players, five from Mitchell and four from Cunnamulla, will go head to head against St George at Arthur Beetson Oval in Roma.
Coach Shane Peacock said the team had enjoyed a successful year so far.
"We have only lost two games for the season, one being because we had to forfeit due to too many boys being in a representative side.
"We have had some good competition against StGeorge this season and we are blessed to have a few strong players, so hopefully we can get up and win,” Peacock said.
The Western Rugby League decided to help organise a side for the U14s because there previously wasn't opportunity to play rugby league once finished with the under-12 junior competition.
Western Rugby League representative coordinator Shaun Radnedge said the team opened up a pathway for young footballers.
"The Western Rugby League took on the responsibility to enter the U14 Western Ringers side into the Roma competition and it is great to see them being able to play footy,” Radnedge said.
"Now that there isn't a senior league competition in our area, it will hopefully encourage them to play in the future,” Peacock added.
The Western Ringers will travel to Mitchell on Friday for a training session ahead of the 'big dance' on Saturday.
