SURF LIFESAVING: How do you improve on perfection?

It's a question gun Noosa lifesavers Jordan Mercer and Kirsty Higgison want to answer when The Aussies roll into town on April 16.

Mercer will come into the national championships as the one to beat.

Her bloodlines run deep in The Aussies - her father Darren and uncle Dean were Open Ironman champions.

The younger Mercer is the current Ironwoman superstar, having claimed the 2015/16 Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Ironwoman title.

Her club mate, friend and training partner Higgison was the surprise packet of the same series after making the move from Mooloolaba.

A rookie to the elite competition, Higgison was in a final-round showdown with Mercer for the title and finished the series in second place.

Mercer reckons it has not been hard to draw inspiration for the upcoming Aussies which, despite the lure of professional competition, remains the most sought-after of surf lifesaving crowns.

"Nothing beats the intensity (of The Aussies)," Mercer said.

"Nothing compares to the Australian championships.

"It really is the Mecca of surf lifesaving."

In what she admitted was a season focused on individual success, Mercer said she was buzzing at the opportunity to also work alongside her club mates in the team events over the nine days of Aussies action.

"More than anything I'm looking forward to racing with my Noosa teammates," she said.

She said The Aussies tested athletic prowess, beach smarts and surf skillsand this year would be no different at Alexandra Headland, Mooloolaba and Maroochydore.

"Maroochydore Beach really is quite a tricky one. It's a totally different beach from one race to another," Mercer said.
