Labor's Saffin bows out: “I set the standard”

LABOR contender for Page Janelle Saffin has bowed out of Federal politics after a close defeat to sitting member Kevin Hogan, who is expected to declare victory today with 52.1% of the preferred count.

"Last night I said I would not recontest in 2019," Ms Saffin said.

"If there are some young up-and-comers - and we have a few - why not let them have a go. I'd like to pass on the mantle," she said.

Despite the close call, Ms Saffin said: "Labor won the campaign on policy debate. The coalition lost their mandate on jobs and growth and on their tax cuts to big corporations and millionaires," she said.

Ms Saffin was given a standing ovation by her supporters at The Workers Club on Saturday night.

"We've got a 2.2 per cent swing to Page, so page is now a marginal, competitive and in play.

"For the people of Page they wanted to be marginal. When I became member in 2007 the seat had suffered from what I call the 'century of neglect'. I did things differently and delivered things that hadn't been done before. I set the standard for not only delivery but engagement, always making sure the community knew what was going on. That standard has to prevail, in fact, that standard has to be lifted.

"We are proudly Labor. We had the best policies - health, education, renewables, CSG, NBN.

"It was clear what Bill Shorten said last night. The coalition has lost their mandate and Labor is back."

When asked what she thought of Turnbull leadership in regard to the swing away from the Coalition, Ms Saffin quipped: "I think Tony Abbot said it all last night. I'll leave the last word with Tony."

Yesterday Mr Abbott hinted at his intentions to return to the front bench.

"I want to say a big thank you to the people of Page because they were very generous very warm and very encouraging," she said.
