Sense of purpose about Caloundra Cup contender

RACING: His charge stormed to a crushing conquest of the Ipswich Cup recently but trainer David Brideoake expects a tougher test in the Sunshine Coast's most prestigious race on Saturday.

Self Sense is one of the main fancies for the Listed $175,000 Caloundra Cup (2400m) after blitzing his rivals by almost seven lengths a fortnight ago.

The six-year-old gelding burst clear from the home turn and was still moving away from the rest of the field when he hit the line.

It was an ominous outing which prompted many bookmakers to install Self Sense as a favourite for this weekend's feature race.

Victorian trainer Brideoake believes the son of Street Sense faces a bigger challenge this time around but he's still confident of a strong showing.

"There is probably a bit more opposition (than) in the Ipswich Cup," he said.

"There is a quality horse from Darren Weir (Neverland) and another from Gai Waterhouse (Supply and Demand). They're both top level trainers.

"But I still believe he's going to be highly competitive."

Self Sense has recovered well from his last start and is primed for another good performance.

"He's done really well after the Ipswich Cup," Brideoake said.

"His condition's good. I'm very, very happy with my horse."

Self Sense will have Michael Cahill aboard again and has drawn a favourable barrier, eight of 12.

"He'll settle up there (on the pace) and get some cover somewhere along the way. I'd expect him to go nicely."

The Caloundra Cup is on a nine-race card which also boasts the Listed $175,000 Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) and the Group 3 $125,000 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m).

Star mare Winx won the latter in stunning fashion in 2015.
