UPDATE: A school student had to be cut from the wreckage of a car involved in a two-vehicle collision in Toowoomba this morning.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services station officer Paula Douglas said the collision had caused significant damage to the vehicles.

"We've come across two vehicles that have collided at the corner of South and Ruthven Sts," she said.

"On arrival there was one person that was encapsulated.

"We used hydraulic rescue tools to free that person for the Queensland Ambulance Service to make their assessment and treatment of the person.

"There was some significant damage to the vehicle, however it was a relatively easy extraction for the QAS to get in and free that person."

Busy morning traffic was slightly congested around the crash scene as emergency services cleared the area.

The vehicles were towed from the scene about 9.20am.

EARLIER: Emergency services are responding to reports of a serious two-vehicle crash in Toowoomba.

The crash has occurred at the intersection of Ruthven and South Sts about 8.30am.

Two people are being treated at the scene by Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics.

There are reports one of the motorists involved could be trapped in the crash wreckage.

Emergency services are arriving at the scene of the incident.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area due to heavy traffic congestion.
