Sister of cosmetic surgery 'victim' to sue surgeon

THE sister of an Australian woman who died in Mexico after a simple cosmetic procedure says she will not leave the Latin American country until surgeons who performed the operation "take full responsibility" for their alleged medical malpractice.

In a statement issued from Mexico City, Andrea Sarmonikas said legal procedures had begun against the surgeon who performed liposuction and buttock "lipoinjerto" on 29-year-old Eva Nicole Sarmonikas on March 20, citing the results of a second, privately-funded autopsy on her sister's body.

"Contrary to what was ruled by the doctor of the Attorney General of the State of Baja California, the second autopsy determined that my sister was perforated on more than four occasions in the right lung, causing a hemorrhage that led to the death. Evita did not die from a pulmonary embolism nonthrombotic as we were first advised," said Ms Sarmonikas.

Eva, from the Gold Coast, died in the Baja California city of Mexicali after suffering a heart attack following surgery. She had apparently travelled to the city while on holiday with her boyfriend.

Slamming the "personal interests and lack of education" of Mexico's cosmetic surgery industry, Ms Sarmonikas alleged that the lead surgeon, an accredited specialist in plastic and reconstructive surgery, did not have the expertise to perform cosmetic procedures.
