Teen sings about grief of losing friend on latest EP

SOPHIE Rose grew up with older sisters belting out songs by pop stars Avril Lavigne and Taylor Swift.

Now she's a musician in her own right with several EPs of original songs under her belt, and she's working to create opportunities for other local singer-songwriters.

The Rockhampton teen started performing at country music festivals as an 11-year-old, and while honing her craft she's branched out to playing at markets, pubs, balls and festivals.

Her musical style has evolved, but Sophie said you can still catch a glimpse of her country roots.

"Although I started out country and you can still hear the lilt in my voice, my current work is very alternative pop now," she said.

"The music I've been writing lately has been very much like Avril Lavigne, Alanis Morrissette and Jewel all mashed into one."

Sophie has recorded three EPs of original songs titled A Taste, Sunday, and her latest, Sunflowers, which was released in December 2015.

Sunflowers is a deeply personal collection of songs, and grew from Sophie working through her grief after losing a friend.

"His favourite flowers were sunflowers, so I wrote the song specifically for all my friends and his family to express the grief they felt for him," she explained.

"The whole album is very emotional; it's about grief, different types of loss and heartbreak."

Sophie is the driving force behind Late Night Originals, a new event in Rockhampton providing a place for singer-songwriters to showcase original work.

The event was inspired by OmFest in Yeppoon, which Sophie has been involved with for several years.

"I loved that they had a venue for songwriters, and wanted to bring that into Rockhampton and add to it," she said.

Sophie is also a regular performer at Allsorts Open Mic, a monthly event which provides stage time and experience for performers of all kinds and all levels of skill.
