South West girls make their mark at state competition

RUGBY LEAGUE: The next generation of bush footy is in safe hands, as the girls of the southwest proudly showed at the 10-12 years state championships on the Gold Coast.

While they didn't put any wins on the board during the four-day competition at the end of term three, all eyes were still on the outback girls because of their unbreakable team spirit and sheer determination.

"We came up against a lot of harder teams but had our best game against the Darling Downs,” team manager Rachel Griffin said.

"Their improvement from the first game to their last was absolutely incredible over the four days.”

This is only the beginning for the group of girls, who come from Quilpie, Charleville, Roma, St George and Wandoan.

Off the back of this carnival, most of the girls could walk the path to higher-level rugby league competitions in the future, according to theirmanager.

"Our girls who won player of the match on the different days had been nominated by the opposition coaches and trainers and Amelia O'Toole was named Players' Player,” Griffith said.

"There are a lot of eyes on these girls and a lot of officials are looking at them and seeing a lot of potential to play in future league competitions.”

Players of the Match:

South West v Wide Bay: Mercedes Anderson
