Southwest takes the plate

The South West Country Rugby League senior representative side showed their might at the weekend, taking home the plate at the 47th Battalion divisional championships in Toowoomba.

The side showed heart in their matches against much larger centres the Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba, coming away the deserved winners of the plate event after an early loss.

The boys from the bush met a very strong Rockhampton side in their first match and lost 12-4.

Rocky went on to beat Bundaberg 44-8 in the play-off for third and fourth in the major final.

The Sunshine Coast team defeated Toowoomba 12-8 in an exciting major final.

South West Country played Central Highlands in the plate final, winning 18-6 with special mention to Mitchell's Tom Kennedy.

The 19 players held their own against competition that was stiffer than usual.

Team members came from across the west, joining the side from Chinchilla, StGeorge, Red Bulls (Wallumbilla/Surat), Roma Cities, Mitchell, Augathella and Charleville.

Coach Wayne Collie said they played well considering the time-frame.

"The boys put in a great effort, especially since we had our first team training run at 10am before playing our first match at 12pm.

"Credit goes to them for gelling as quick as they did.

"The Rocky team was solid from the start and the guys did well to get back on their feet and keep at it.

"I was very happy with the end result. Now it's time for the boys to get ready for the team Queensland Outback side-selection match in three weeks.”
