Southwest trainers make a clean sweep at Easter races

Visitors may have come from afar to watch the Easter races in Roma, but on the track, well-known locals were the real stars of the show.

Craig Smith, Scott Thompson, and Ben Waldron, who all call Bassett Park home, laid claim to at least one winner apiece at Saturday's meeting, while their colleague from Charleville, Wayne Baker, also came through with a winner of his own.

"We had five runners and two winners, a second and two thirds, so they all claimed the money,” Smith said.

"There was a small field, and, because there is so much racing over Easter time, it often happens but the quality of fields was very good and that showed true in the races.

"It was great to have success on the home track and I'm quite happy with the way they all raced.”

During the holiday period, Smith has been busy sending his horses far and wide across the state, attempting to spread out across many of the 13 Easter meets held in Queensland.

"I myself went to Gladstone over the weekend for a big Battle of the Bush qualifier with Malibu Affair and he ran second behind the country champion, Fab's Cowboy,” he said.

"Anyhow, second was still good and made the trip worthwhile.

"Then we were in Augathella on Monday and had four runners out there; it is always a big meeting at Augathella on Easter Monday.”

Winners at the Roma meeting were Besters (Smith), Golovkin (Rodgers), Yokai (Baker), It's My Time (Smith), and Arctic Circle (Waldron).
