Special night for siblings after cancer diagnosis

FOR any family, watching their son open the car door for his sister as she makes her way to her final high school formal would be a special moment.

But words can't describe how special the moment will be for Craignish's Janine and Ian Cawthray, whose son Mitchell was diagnosed with a brain tumour earlier this year.

The diagnosis devastated his family.

But it also made them determined to beat the odds.

Mitchell and his mum had to travel to Brisbane, where they have been staying so he can undergo treatment.

Next week Mitchell will start his next round of treatment when he starts chemotherapy, but on Friday night he wasn't thinking about that.

On Friday he got to share a special moment with his sister Cassie, 17, before she celebrated her final year at Xavier Catholic College with her friends.

Mitchell and his mum Janine travelled back to Craignish from Brisbane for the occasion so he could hold the door open for his sister as she got into the vintage car selected for the occasion.

Dad Ian said it was an incredibly special moment for his children and it would give Mitchell a much-needed boost ahead of his chemotherapy.

Mitchell and Janine have already arrived back in Brisbane and the chemotherapy cycle will start today.
