Surrender your bras to raise awareness for breast cancer

THE WOMEN of Roma are being urged to surrender their old bras to help raise awareness for breast cancer awareness month.

Chandra Yoga and Wellbeing, in conjunction with Roma Socials, will be running a bra surrender this month, welcoming anyone to come down to Chandra and boldly hang their old bras on the line.

All bras that are still in good condition will be donated to Support The Girls Australia, a charity that donates bras, sanitary products and toiletries to girls and women in need.

Member of Roma Socials, Candace Davis encourages all Roma woman to go through their wardrobes this month to see if they can find something to donate.

"We wanted to do something where the whole community could act together and not only bring awareness to breast cancer but break down the barrier we have as women to not talk about things,” she said.

"We want women to feel liberated - by coming in and being proud of the fact they are doing some good.

"It would be great if the wall could be completely filled.”

This year alone, it is predicted about 20,000 women will be newly diagnosed with breast cancer.

Megan Brown from Chandra said starting conversations about having regular breast check-ups is essential in creating awareness of an issue that affects so many.

"We were sitting out the front and the old ladies who came in for a yoga class were like 'oh someone's hanging all their bras out',” she said.

"So we sat in a circle and I told them what the bras were about and all the ladies that had breast cancer looked really touched.

"Having a wall like this breaks down so many other limitations and shows women need to talk about this because it's something you shouldn't feel like you need to keep to yourself.

"If its in your face and in your mind they'll remember to do check-ups or look for signs, more so if we never ever talked about it.”

Chandra and Roma Socials will be hosting other events this month to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer, including a karma yoga class on October 10, Gin and Jive on October 26 and a breast check brunch on October 27.
