Thaiday accepts ban over tackle

AGGRESSIVE forward Sam Thaiday has opted to take the safe option and plead guilty to dumping NSW captain Paul Gallen on his head during Queensland’s 26-16 series-clinching State of Origin win.

An unsuccessful trip to the judiciary could have meant an extra week off for the Broncos back-rower had he been unsuccessful of getting a downgrade or escaping the charge.

It also clears the way for him to play in the third Origin game in Sydney on July 13, when Queensland will chase its first series clean sweep since 2010.

With Brisbane having a bye in round 18, a three-game suspension would have taken in the third Origin clash.

Images of Thaiday’s 13th-minute lifting tackle showing a vertical Gallen with his head centimetres from the ground did not look good.

After speaking with coach Wayne Bennett and other Brisbane management, Thaiday entered an early guilty plea.

He will miss Saturday’s clash with the Bulldogs and the round 17 blockbuster against Cronulla.

Thaiday will have 43 carry-over points, which could prove costly later in the season when the finals roll around.
