Death toll from Baghdad suicide bombing reaches 250

THE death toll from Saturday's suicide bombing in a busy Baghdad shopping district has reached 250, Iraqi authorities say.

It is the worst single vehicle bomb attack in Iraq since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in 2003 by Allied forces.

As families took to the streets to break their Ramadan fast, a truck laden with explosives was detonated.

With the Iraqi Government under public pressure following the bombing, Interior Minister Mohammed Ghabban has offered his resignation, conceding that the security checkpoints throughout the city are "absolutely useless", several media agencies have reported.
