IN DEEP: Tobruk could mean dive heaven

IT IS very possible a second former Australian Navy ship will be scuttled in southern Queensland to create a wreck dive.

For a number of years, plenty of rumours have been circling around the recreational dive industry as to what will happen to the former HMAS Tobruk, an Australian Navy heavy landing ship.

Work has been done behind the scenes by an enthusiastic group from the Wide Bay and Bundaberg area to get the ship.

The group would like to see the Tobruk scuttled off the Fraser Coast, midway between Bundaberg and Hervey Bay, so it could be accessed from most coastal towns in the region.

It takes a lot of money to prepare a ship for scuttling and upwards of $1million has already been committed to the initiative.

If the group is successful, it will mean divers could dive the ex-HMAS Brisbane off the Sunshine Coast one day and then drive a couple of hours north and dive the Tobruk the next day.

While travelling between the two dive sites, divers could also stop off at Rainbow Beach and dive Wolf Rock.

There will be plenty of divers wishing the group every success in securing the Tobruk as a dive wreck.
