TRAGIC OUTCOME: Divers find missing man’s body in river

UPDATE: 1.30PM: The new year has started with tragedy in the Gympie region after a young man drowned while camping with friends near Kybong.

The Sunshine Coast man was one of three friends who went swimming in the Mary River just past midnight on New Year's Eve.

His friends lost sight of him, sparking a 12 hour search of the river near Dobson and Traveston Crossing roads by police and SES crews.

His body was found by police divers about 80m from where he was last seen, with family and friends assembled at the campsite during the search left heartbroken by the news.

Imbil Police sergeant Bill Greer said it was a tragic start the 2021.

"It's just devastating," Sgt Greer.

"It's devastating for the family who have been here on scene … to see what they're having to go through right now is just devastating.

"Investigations are still ongoing but we will be preparing a report for the coroner and it will all come out in that."

 

UPDATE 12.15PM: Police divers have been called in to help with the search for a young man who went missing during a midnight swim in the Mary River Monday morning.

Police scoured the river near Kybong, Traveston and Amamoor through the night and morning in their search.

The 20-year-old was camping with friends on New Year's Eve at a popular site off Dobson and Traveston Crossing roads.

He was reportedly swimming in waist deep water with a group of friends about 12.30am when he disappeared.

They group was using headlights to light the water.

Police said the man's friends saw him in the water, turned around and then noticed he had disappeared.

Three Queensland Fire and Emergency Service swift water rescue crews assisted to try and locate the man without any luck during the night.

Police have continued their search today, assisted by divers and State Emergency Service personnel who are scouring the area.

He is described as caucasian with olive skin, is of a medium build, has dark hair and was last seen wearing dark coloured shorts and a short-sleeved shirt.

Investigators are particularly urging any local property owners to keep an eye out for the man.

Anyone in the area who may have seen him or have further information is also urged to contact them.

EARLIER 10AM: Police are searching for a man who went missing in water near Traveston Crossing shortly after midnight on New Year's Eve.

Emergency crews were called out for a swift water rescue after a man, believed to be camping in the area, went into water near Dobson and Traveston Crossing roads at Amamoor about 12.30am.

They were unable to locate him, and the search recommended about 7am this morning.

Details about the missing man have not yet been made available.
