OPINION: Courier Mail editor should go after mayor cleared
FOR almost a year the mayor of Ipswich Paul Pisasale has been under one of the most audacious personal attacks ever launched against a politician by The Courier Mail.
Acting on information they had been fed by Pisasale's enemies they devoted countless paragraphs in an attempt to discredit the mayor.
Basically they labelled him a crook and implicated high profile business identities and no doubt it was this mountain of publicity which forced the government's hand to have him investigated by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
For 10 months investigators of the CCC methodically went through the personal and business life of Cr Pisasale.
While the mayor put on a brave face at his countless public appearances the investigation took a heavy toll on his health.
Friends of the mayor and close associates were the only ones who really knew the immense pressure he was under.
Behind his smile he carried the worry that despite all the great work he had done for Ipswich his reputation was about to be shredded.
Well now the mayor can once again hold his head high because despite the media attacks his reputation remains solid as a man who cares for the Ipswich community with blinding passion.
During the investigations this newspaper reported on every innuendo thrown up and tore them down by telling the facts.
And that is what has triumphed for the mayor today.
The Courier Mail editor should be handing in his resignation this morning.
He led his paper in a bid to destroy an honest man and he failed because one thing stood in the way.
