Tsunami warning after 7.2m earthquake near Papua New Guinea

A MAGNITUDE-7.2 earthquake has struck in the Pacific between Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands with a local tsunami warning current, seismologists said.

The quake hit at a depth of 22 kilometres some 149 kilometres south-west of Panguna in PNG and 642 kilometres from the Solomons capital Honiara, the US Geological Survey said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said no Pacific-wide threat was expected but that "hazardous waves" were "possible within 300 kilometres of the epicentre along the coasts of the Solomon islands and Papua New Guinea".

The centre said government agencies responsible for threatened coastal areas should take action to inform and instruct any coastal population at risk in accordance with their own evaluation.

It said waves would start hitting coastlines from 7:22am UTC (5:22pm AEST).
