WASPS are in plague proportions across the Toowoomba region, causing a stinging pain for anyone who gets in their way.

A number of farmers have reported being harassed by swarms of stinging insects.

They are particularly rife between Top Camp and Vale View, but have also been reported as far away as Millmerran and Crows Nest.

Visitors to the Heritage Bank Toowoomba Royal Show also saw nests filled with aggressive wasps.

Shane Gorry from The Pestman said most of the wasps were the paper wasp species.

"We've had more calls than usual about wasps over the three months," he said.

Mr Gorry said there were lots of ways to get rid of wasps.

"We've got a product called wasp freeze, which you can use from three metres away.

"Sometimes we just use a liquid."

He said the wasps were very nasty and very defensive.

"The sting from a wasp is very nasty - we've been stung across a few times.

"I was stung in the face about eight times recently when I was trying to access a sub-floor.

"Some people can go into anaphylactic shock because of the acid.

"People need to be mindful of that.

"It's nice to try and rectify it yourself - but if you have kids they can have extreme reactions and can be hospitalised."

Mr Gorry recommended residents call a licenced pest control technician to deal with them.

He said if they were unable to deal with the nest correctly the wasps would see them as a threat and try to pursue them.

One farmer in Top Camp said he could barely leave his home without being attacked by the wasps.
