Dam funding will create 6000 jobs, says MP
FUNDING for the design and planning of Urannah Dam is just "months away", promising to create 6000 jobs in the process.
Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen posted on his Facebook page he was "fighting for federal funding to get the dam under way".
"The construction of Urannah Dam - just west of Mackay - is estimated to create 6000 jobs, plenty of them local jobs," Mr Christensen said.
The topic of Urannah came up during a visit by Acting Opposition Leader John-Paul Langbroek, alongside Member for Whitsunday Jason Costigan in Proserpine this week.
As recently reported, a Whitsundays Marketing and Development proposal from 2013 has resurfaced to build a road to link Proserpine and Collinsville.
Mr Costigan believes the Urannah Dam would play a big role in securing infrastructure projects like roads being built.
"There's $5billion coming out of Canberra and there seems to be some jockeying about what projects should have been at the front of the grid ... Urannah - that is your catalyst for your road."
He said Urannah could be just the ticket to turning around the depleting Collinsville, which is also losing its aged care facility, Hillside Haven.
"Trying to get the road to Collinsville... if there's 20,000 people living in Collinsville, fantastic. But if there's three men and a dog and there's no race club, no football club, no nursing home, no this, no that, then you think 'well hang on, why are we going to build a road there?'
"But if you've got a dam around the corner, there's gotta be a road in there somewhere."
