Mostert in good spirits after Bathurst 1000 crash

UPDATE: V8 Supercars driver Chaz Mostert is reportedly in good spirits following his horrific crash on the track at Mount Panorama.

The race's definding campion was airlifted to hospital this afternoon with a fractured left femur and fractured left wrist.

Five marshals were also injured in the accident. Four have minor injuries and a fifth has been been taken to hospital and is in a stable condition.

Prodrive Racing Australia team boss Tim Edwards says Mostert was even able to crack a joke in the medical tent.

"Thank God we signed that contract a couple of months ago!" Mostert said to Edwards.

Edwards said Mostert was thinking of his team and apologised to everyone who put in the hard work to get him out on the track.

"He is in good spirits, but I think there is a bit of green stick (pain killing drugs) in that," Edwards told v8supercars.com.au.

Mostert has now been airlifted to Orange hospital for further treatment.

Track activity has been cancelled for the remainder of the day.

3:15PM LAST year's Bathurst 1000 winner has been involved in a huge crash in practice.

Chaz Mostert slammed into a wall at the top of the mountain and was treated by medical staff before being taken away in an ambulance.

He waved to the crowd as he left the track, suggesting his injuries may not be too serious.

The Falcon was a complete write off.

There will be no further track activity today at the track.
