Watch the winter kilos

IT IS definitely getting cooler, which means our bodies are craving foods that are more substantial and warming.

Some people find they put on extra weight over winter, and this is fairly normal, although it is never a good idea to allow yourself to gain too much weight, as it's so hard to get it off again.

Here are some tips to see you through winter while not gaining the kilos.

Start the day with half a freshly squeezed lemon in a small amount of room temperature or warm water. This stimulates our main fat metabolising organ, the liver, assisting it to burn fat faster and more efficiently.

While we are probably craving carbs, they do tend to put on weight, so the best tip here is, let yourself have a nourishing high carb breakfast but add in some protein, like organic oats with almond milk and a sprinkling of LSA powder or chia seeds. Some gluten-free toast with avocado and boiled egg. Fried eggs and bacon with gluten-free toast and coconut oil, or try out this new recipe for coconut pikelets.

Have a small snack or meal every three hours, and aim to have warming soups, stews and casseroles for lunch and dinner, adding in more vegetables as the main carb and less grains, and always with a protein, such as legumes, organic tofu, chicken, seafood or meat.

Using metabolism-stimulating herbs and spices such as cayenne pepper, chili, garlic, ginger, rosemary and turmeric is also great.

Drink warming herbal teas through the day, like green tea, which has been known to assist weight loss and stop sugar cravings help and make sure you are chewing your food 30-40 times a mouthful.

This not only gives your brain time to register how much you've actually eaten, but it breaks down the food particles so you can absorb the nutrients better, stay more regular to the bathroom and you start to look and feel down right amazing.
