Why one man ran in a 24-hour challenge

IT WAS just six hours from when James O'Shea found out dad Pat had terminal cancer to when he passed away.

Because of this Mr O'Shea laced up his shoes to complete a six-hour stint on a treadmill as part of Hop on for Hope.

The 24-hour treadmill challenge was run by Complete Body Health and Fitness from 6am Saturday to 6am yesterday to raise money for Toowoomba's cancer wellness centre Hope Horizons.

Mr O'Shea, a Hope Horizons ambassador and Toowoomba region councillor, formed a team and hopped on board.

He explained his father had gone into surgery to have a tumour removed from his bowel in 2015. What was meant to be a routine operation discovered terminal cancer and Pat came out of the surgery in intensive care and on life support.

"Saturday, September 5 1pm, doctors told the family dad's got terminal cancer," Mr O'Shea said.

"The family made the tough decision to turn off life support and dad passed at 7pm that night. So really his cancer journey was only six hours.

"When it comes to cancer I actually consider myself and my family lucky because as I said, my father passed not knowing he had cancer. He actually didn't suffer from cancer."

Mr O'Shea said said six hours on a treadmill was nothing when you considered what so many cancer patients and families were going through.

Complete Body owner Ben Loxley said they had received a lot of support from the community and were raising awareness for the cause.

Mr Loxley said they had affiliated the business with Hope Horizons and would try and do two to three events to support them each year.
