Elderly woman wakes up to knife bandit

IPSWICH detectives are determined to catch the man responsible for the callous robbery of an elderly woman in her home.

The 85-year-old woman was sleeping when the knife-wielding thief broke into her North Ipswich house about 7am yesterday. He ransacked several rooms before waking the woman and demanding money.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Heath McQueen said it appeared the offender was in the house for some time prior to the woman being woken up.

"She was startled awake by the presence of someone in her bedroom," Snr Sgt McQueen said.

"He has been through every room in the dwelling and spent a considerable amount of time going through all the rooms."

The offender took a sum of money from the woman before fleeing the Holdsworth Rd address.

The victim was not physically harmed in the robbery, however police said she was traumatised by the incident.

Snr Sgt McQueen said police were concerned that the robber had targeted a house that he knew was occupied at the time.

Police said the offender gained entry through a window.

"This person has broken in the house even though somebody was home; it's brazen and that's the concerning thing," he said.

"We have put considerable resources into this investigation already."

Those investigations included an extensive doorknock of the area.

The offender was described as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in appearance, and tall, clean shaven and about 20 years old. Anyone with information that could assist police should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
