Darling Downs boy on call to save mother's life

YOUNG Dalby boy Alex Gallen knows it only takes a phone call to save his mum's life.

Alex is well trained in dialling emergency services for mum Alicia Gallen, who suffers from severe asthma and allergic reactions.

The 11-year-old, who is autistic, phoned paramedics for Ms Gallen twice in April due to her asthma.

Ms Gallen said Alex had known how to dial emergency services since he was three.

"I've educated him from a young age on what to do and how to do it," Ms Gallen said.

"We practised when he was little.

"I pretended I was the other person on the phone so he knew what answers to give.

"If something bad happened, he knew how to call for assistance."

He made his first 000 call at age seven and has made eight emergency calls for his mum.

"Each one of those has literally saved my life," Ms Gallen said.

"I have been in a position when I can no longer speak.

"It's dire straits if they don't get to me.

"Whether or not their parents have medical conditions, it should be taught to every child from a young age."

The Queensland Ambulance Service presented a certificate of appreciation to Alex at the Dalby station last week.
